dayum..

Bruce Peninsula - A Mountain is a Mouth
an 11-piece band from Toronto (bass, guitar, drums, 8-member gospel choir!!!) that has made one fucking awesome album here.  this album is right up there with timber timbre (check it out below, if you haven't yet) for my favorite album of the year.

some new albums from this month

here are a couple really good albums that leaked this month.

Condo Fucks - Fuckbook
Condo Fucks is the pseudonym of Yo La Tengo.  this album is consistent with the rest of Yo La Tengo's output....really, really good.

Mono - Hymn to the Immortal Wind
this is an album that has been described as "epic" and "triumphant sounding".  you'll like this album if you're a fan of Godspeed You Black Emperor! or Explosions in the Sky.  This album is almost as good as some of the GYBE! albums, almost.

a couple...

Broken Strings LP
I can't really find much info about this album.  i guess one guy made this album on cassette 4-track and it was released last year, not sure when he made it though.  it reminds me of something from late 90s elephant six collective.  full of "burnt-out power pop".  give it a listen....its awesome.

John Cale - Fear
this album always makes me think of spring.  the beginning of spring too, like the first nice weekend after the shitty winter.  where everyone is out and friendly and smiling.  i like this album.

music that makes me feel like my head's gonna explode

This is a tortoise post. if you don't know, they are five brilliant musicians making music that can't be easily categorized.

Tortoise - s/t (1994)

Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die (1996)

Tortoise - TNT (1998)
This was the first Tortoise album i heard and still my favorite.  This album is absolutely serene.

Tortoise & The Ex - In the Fishtank EP (1999)

Tortoise - Standards (2001)
This album is right up there with TNT for me.  'Monica' has one of my favorite melodies of all time.

Tortoise - It's All Around You (2004)

Tortoise & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - The Brave and the Bold (2006)
a covers album with Bonnie 'Prince' Billy singing.  the cover of Love is Love is awesome.

Tortoise - A Lazarus Taxon (2006)
This is a box set of rarities and the third disc is an expanded edition of Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters (which contains remixed versions of songs from their first album).

more new albums

i've been digging on these albums lately:

Timber Timbre - s/t
This album has been on repeat for the last 4 or 5 days now.

Andrew Jackson Jihad - Operation Stackola
This is the new tour EP from AJJ.  No new original songs but there are a bunch of new cover songs.  if this doesn't win best album artwork of the year it will be a travesty.

some things age well....

...and old blues is one of those things.  one of the only true american art forms.  and i've been listening to a lot of things like this lately so i figured i'd share the wealth..

Prison Songs - Historical Recordings From Parchman Farm, 1947-48 - Vol. 1: Murderous Home

Last Kind Words (1926 - 1953)

Mississippi Moaners 1927 - 1942
